PET scan stands for Positron emission tomography which is used to detect early signs of cancer, brain conditions, and heart disease. An involvement of safe radioactive tracer is involved in it that helps in detecting diseased cells.

One of the types of Nuclear medicine imaging is PET Scan. In nuclear medicine, a small and safe amount of radioactive material called radiotracers is used. This radiotracer is given through an IV.

PROCESS

Nuclear medicine is used to diagnose many conditions. The patient will inhale, swallow, or be injected with a radiopharmaceutical, which is a radioactive material. After consuming this substance, the patient will simply lie down on a table or machine, and at the same time camera takes the picture.

The camera follows the area where the radioactive material is concentrated, and this will tell the doctor or specialist about the problem or disease or condition that the patient is suffering from and what the exact spot of the disease is.

PET scans can provide brief information about how a body organ is functioning. A PET scan is an outpatient procedure which means you can go back to daily routine work after the test is finished. You do not require a hospital stay to undergo a PET scan.
