PET scans are particularly helpful for evaluating diagnosed cases of cancer to determine the spread of cancer and how is its treatment response. A PET scan can show how proper is the working of different parts of the body.

The images can indicate the body parts being examined that also involve any abnormal areas and can ascertain how well these different body parts are functioning.

BEFORE PET SCAN

- PET scans are generally performed on an OPD basis and don't require you to stay. This eliminates the need for overnight hospitalization.

- It's important for you to come on time because the radiotracer works well for a short time. There might be a need to cancel your scan appointment if you're late.

- Your instructions leaflet will mention anything you ought to do to prepare for the scan.

- Usually, it is advised to avoid eating anything for 6 hours before the scan but one can drink water.

- One must also avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours before the scan appointment.

- It's a good idea to wear comfortable and loose clothing. It may be possible to wear this type of clothing during the scan, although sometimes, it is asked to change into a hospital gown.

- Avoid wearing any kind of accessories pr clothing containing metal parts, such as zips.

AFTER PET SCAN

- The first thing done right after the PET SCAN is cannula removal from the arm before one can go home which is done by your Radiographer.

- One can drink and/or eat once the cannula is removed.

- The radiation in the radioactive tracer is very little which can be flushed out by drinking plenty of fluids after your scan.

- The radioactive tracer in use radiates out a little amount of radiation. Hence, you should avoid close contact with pregnant women, babies, and young children for 6 hours after the scan.

- You need someone to take you home if you had medicine sedative. For the next 24 hours, you also shouldn’t:

       Drink alcohol

       Drive

       Operate heavy machinery

       Sign any legally binding documents

If you plan to make international travel within 7 days of your PET scan, it is suggested that you take your appointment letter along. This is because the sensitive radiation monitors at airports might pick up traces of radiation left in your body.
