Can AI predict Cancer?

Healthcare sciences have seen exponential technological advancements over the span of this past decade. Researchers, Scientists, Data Analysts and Healthcare Analysts have all collaborated together to give birth to Artificial Intelligence. AI has been conceptualized to essentially make the job of humans faster, efficient and errorless. With such immaculate accuracy, healthcare sciences have touched newer heights and saved quantifiable greater lives. With the advent of AI, wide spectrums of medical tools have also benefited. Not only treatment, but even diagnosis has seen a considerable change in the past decade, for the better. Unfortunately, over the past decade, Cancer has also posed a strong threat to human lives, taking over millions of lives.

Cancer is a dreaded world but there is hope. A new solution to Cancer has been brought into being as AI has promised to holistically attack all varieties, degrees and intensities of Cancer. This holistic approach is majorly divided into 3 areas of critical examination namely Diagnosis, Treatment and Palliative Care. Let us learn in depth, the impact AI has had and will have over on Cancer with existing tools paired with newer techniques

Diagnosis

During early diagnosis, theoretically, doctors use a number of imaging tests to answer a range of questions pertaining to Cancer. These questions include :

  • What is the difference between a lump and a cancerous lump?
  • If it is a cancerous lump, what is the extent of its metastasis?
  • What areas in the body have been exposed to Cancer?
  • What are the chances of its recurrence

So on and so forth.

How do doctors arrive at the answer to these questions? There are TumourMarker Tests which can help a Pathologist & Oncologist ascertain whether the Cancer cells can be killed with a Tumor Based Approach or not.

Then comes Genome Sequencing in ascertaining the presence of Cancer cells in the body. With markers for over 10 type of Cancers such as Breast cancer, Ovarian cancer, Colon cancer, Thyroid cancer, Kidney cancer etc, Genome Sequencing uses Deep Learning instruments such as RNN and CNN models alongside Neural networks to interpret images created by billions of nucleotide pairs present in the human genetics.

Technological lingo can get overwhelming very fast but it is commonly used and accessible  tests that make Cancer diagnosis a lot less daunting. Imaging Tests such as

  • Computerized tomography (CT) scan
  • Bone scan
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • Positron emission tomography (PET) scan
  • Ultrasound
  • X-ray
  • Mammography
  • Pap Smear Tests

widely and regularly used, that makes technology a little more approachable to laymen.

Biopsies are also a widely accepted method wherein a sample is collected for testing in a laboratory. These biopsies include various types that aid Cancer diagnosis such as :

  • Fine-needle aspiration
  • Core needle biopsy
  • Vacuum-assisted biopsy
  • Image-guided biopsy
  • Endoscopic biopsy
  • Skin biopsy
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Surgical biopsy
